Duck Duck Books Design Retainer

Becoming a design partner to elevate a direct-to-consumer startup.

How can a small brand keep up with its design needs?

Situation

Independent publisher of multilingual board books, Duck Duck Books, had a tall order. By competing in the D2C world, they needed to generate a lot of aesthetically-pleasing creative for social channels, their website, and many campaigns and real-world execution. They had a great visual brand, but a limited budget to execute it, and a need to develop the brand voice. They approached me to help them develop creative on a retainer basis.

Approach

Duck Duck Books was a client of my agency, WILL+WAY. I served as creative director and project manager, and brought on an art director, presentation designer, and illustrator to help bring creatives to life. I was responsible conceptually for everything, building creative briefs based on client needs, and guiding creative to build the work out, plus relaying client feedback as needed. And the team was responsible for knocking all of it out of the park.

Results

For two years, my creative team helped the client fulfill their creative needs with no in-house creatives. Duck Duck Books saw:

$56,000 in annual savings vs. an in-house art director

100+ beautiful branded assets created
